Introductions in English

No matter if during a job interview or a networking event, introducing yourself can feel awkward - not necessarily because of your current level of vocabulary and grammar in the language you are speaking but, maybe, for having your social skills tested in a way they had never been before.

And that is exactly what brought me to list here some advice on how to introduce yourself in English or any language you may learn while studying online at Easy Peasy Brazil.

1. STAND OUT

Make an impact not just with clothing, hairstyle, and makeup, but also verbally. Make sure you are calm to communicate who you are and what you bring to the table so that people will remember you. Examples: A) “I can summarise who I am in three words.” [attention grabbing, and concise]

B) “People who know me best say that I’m…” [quoting someone else sounds more objective]

C) “The quotation I live my life by is…” [which tells your life motto and shows your values directly] D) “When I was seven years old, I always wanted to be…” [if you are applying for your childhood dream job]

E) “Instead of talking about it, can I show you instead?” - then, pull out your portfolio or presentation or whatever visual materials you have prepared. [ suitable for design, marketing, and media jobs] You can also use storytelling techniques to tell others about yourself, your background, your professional achievements, your personal values, and what matters the most to you:

2. ASK QUESTIONS

Commonly, we save questions to the end of a meeting when we actually should not. So make sure you understand who you are talking to and what do they do by the beginning of your interaction so you can free up mental space getting rid of all the questions you might have by simply asking them out loud and tranforming these in useful information you will need during the talk. Be aware that your questions and answers directly impact the direction of the conversation just like ping-pong! Examples:

A) What are the organization's biggest challenges?

B) How would the person doing this job be involved in meeting these challenges?

C) How does the organization support professional development?

D) What are the prospects for advancement within the organization?

E) What is the organization’s management style?

3. STAY RELEVANT

By having a degree in process, specializing in a field, taking language lessons, etc, you show a willingness to update yourself which is a highly-valued trait, and improving valued skills will make you a valuable individual.

4. DO NOT TRY TO "FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT"

"Fake it till you make it" is an English expression that suggests that by imitating confidence, competence, and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their real life and achieve the results they seek. The expression first appeared around 1973 and the earliest reference to a very similar saying occurs in the Simon & Garfunkel song "Fakin’ It” where Simon sings, “And I know I’m fakin’ it, I’m not really makin’ it."

If you have to fake being competent it means you are not as competent as you are pretending to be - or you would not have to fake anything at all first place, right? It is not only intellectually dishonest and morally wrong but also extremely harmful to institutions. So, instead, seek both knowledge and practical experience which are not only going to boost your confidence but also prepare you to help others properly.

5. BE AUTHENTIC

To be yourself takes boldness but when you are honest you build self-respect that will provide you with peace of mind and confidence to do so. That is Easy Peasy Brazil's mission and the reason why we encourage our language students to be upfront and outspoken: we are helping them communicate their personalities and express themselves as well as they do in their native languages.
